The job is for a permanent position working at Blanchard Camp at Km 145.1 on Haines Rd Yukon. It is a small camp of average 1-4 persons, with a cap of never more than 30 people. When occupancy exceeds 9 people, we also send in a Cook's Helper. The rotation in the past has been 10 days in, 10 days out. The job pays a daily salary of $275. The job is about 10 hours per day. The successful candidate should be prepared to spend most of his/her time alone, and needs to be fine with that.
The cooking duties include providing a hot home-cooked breakfast and dinner, and laying out the makings for a bagged lunch in the morning.
A typical day looks like this:
4:30am get up, turn on oven
5-6am get breakfast & lunch items ready
6-7am serve breakfast/prep dinner
7-8am kitchen clean-up
8am-noon housekeeping of all rooms, do check outs, laundry, cleaning list
3:30-5:30pm prep next day's breakfast & lunch, get dinner ready to serve
5:30-6:30pm serve dinner (serve yourself last)
7pm have everything cleaned up in kitchen
The successful candidate must understand that the housekeeping duties need to be just as thoroughly respected and completed as the cooking duties. One shouldn't be afraid to clean toilets, or think that housekeeping is beneath them. The rooms are managed the same way as a hotel would be, with stays (tidying up beds, washrooms and emptying garbage & ashtrays with daily dusting or vacuuming as needed) and check-outs (that involve stripping beds, doing laundry and completely re-making the room up to vacant standard).
As the cook, an understanding of internet, Excel and Word are needed for placing orders, menu planning, etc. There is a daily amount of paperwork/stats to keep up with, showing numbers of people in camp, meal numbers and duties tackled. Cleaning of kitchen & equipment (ovens, deep fryer, overhead fans etc), daily, weekly and monthly duties.
Baking is a huge asset, cost & waste control a necessity.
